If anyone has been living under a rock for the past few years, AI has become the talk of the town, dominating discussions across every field of study. When it comes to learning English or completing homework, students have been blatantly copying AI-generated content. This ongoing debate—students versus teachers—raises the question: which side should we take? In reality, we should all be on Team AI, whether it’s ChatGPT or the next big advancement in artificial intelligence.
What do I mean by that? Instead of resisting AI, we should adapt and harness its benefits. By combining the best of both worlds—human expertise and AI efficiency—we can enhance the learning experience. Some may argue that AI will eventually replace teachers, as it is capable of reasoning, processing vast amounts of data, and providing instant feedback. No human can match its sheer computational power. However, rather than seeing AI as an adversary, we should recognize its potential to become an invaluable learning tool.
Here’s how I see AI, particularly ChatGPT, playing a positive role in advancing English language learning:
1. Word Meanings & Pronunciation
AI can define words, provide their pronunciation, and even delve into etymology for language enthusiasts. Let’s take dog and entrepreneur as examples. With a simple prompt—"Define, provide pronunciation, etymology, and usage examples"—ChatGPT delivers instant, comprehensive results. It can also generate translations, synonyms, and antonyms within seconds. Gone are the days of flipping through physical dictionaries or spending minutes researching definitions. Now, with a single prompt, we can access everything we need to fully understand a word.
2. Grammar & Sentence Correction
Another powerful feature is AI’s ability to correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure. Let’s consider the sentences: "The dogs is barking" and "An entrepreneur achieved an milestone." With a prompt like "Correct these sentences and explain the grammar rules behind the corrections," AI not only fixes the errors but also provides explanations, reinforcing grammatical concepts.
For those skeptical about accuracy, modern AI models are continuously updated, referencing prestigious dictionaries and grammar textbooks. With linked sources, users can verify information themselves. Shakespeare would have loved this tool! And it doesn’t stop at single sentences—entire paragraphs and full texts can be analyzed, corrected, and explained, turning AI into an interactive grammar coach rather than just a quick-fix solution.
Of course, students who believe they can outsmart their teachers by submitting AI-generated essays will soon realize that teachers, too, have AI at their disposal. If I can get an essay written for free by AI, why should I pay someone just because they claim to have an English proficiency certificate? AI is a double-edged sword.
3. Conversational Practice & Reading
AI is revolutionizing language learning by providing opportunities for real-time conversation and text-based practice. Writing correctly is essential, and AI can guide students in structuring their thoughts, responding appropriately, and maintaining a natural flow in conversation. Rather than fearing AI as a threat, we should recognize it as a valuable tool that supports learning in ways traditional methods never could.
Embracing AI as an Educator
With so many ways to use ChatGPT to enhance language skills, I often wonder when my time as a teacher will come to an end. However, as an educator, my role is not to pick sides but to evolve with technology and be part of the process. AI is not something to fear; it’s something to learn from and with. After all, AI was created by brilliant minds—just like teachers—so it’s no surprise that it is packed with knowledge.
These are just my thoughts, my two cents (or perhaps five). Success isn’t about mindlessly copying AI-generated text—it’s about using AI intelligently to deepen understanding. So, I ask you: is this another Blade Runner scenario? Was this article written by AI or by me? Can you tell the difference? Perhaps the real test is learning to trust our instincts and, above all, to remain human.
